What Are Lidar Services and How Do They Work?

Home

If you don’t work in the construction or surveying industries, you may not have heard of lidar services before. Since more than a third of all dam failures or near-failures since 1874 have happened in just the last decade, lidar services and lidar surveying is more important than ever for lidar mapping companies. Keep reading to learn what lidar services are and how they work.

Let’s start with what lidar services are. Lidar stands for light detection and ranging and is a remote sensing method that uses lasers to measure elevations like the ground, forest, and buildings.

What does a lidar system do? Lidar uses ultraviolet-visible or near-infrared sources to sense objects. The light energy emitted by the lidar system is known as the pulse, and light reflected from the ground or object is called the return.

How does the lidar system measure? The lidar system sends a pulse of light and waits for the pulse to return. It measures how long it takes for the emitted pulse to return back to the sensor to get a variable distance between the objects.
